Is Home Education From the UK Recognised Abroad?
If you're thinking of homeschooling your child for whatever reason and are wondering whether they would be at a disadvantage in terms of admission to a university outside of the UK, let me tell you that they wouldn't be. Being homeschooled would not be a problem at all. My child was homeschooled for one subject and some of my friends have chosen to homeschool their children- with reasons ranging from the parent being confident they could do a better teaching job to the child being bullied at their school.
It's sort of obvious really because, even if a child is homeschooled in the UK the local council are still involved in their education to ensure targets are met, arranging home visits with the parents to check progress of the child. I tutored my son at home for AS level English Language. He was a regular student at school taking an additional four A' levels, because he was uncertain at that point whether he wanted to continue his higher education in the UK or abroad and AS level English Language was a prerequisite for one of his chosen destinations. When I enquired with the prospective universities they were ONLY interested in the grade achieved not where he was taught for that subject.
When it comes to examinations in UK the GCSE (age 16) or A Levels (age 18) they will be taken through one of the many boards available, for instance; OCR, AQA, EDEXCEL, WJEC, Cambridge to name a few. These board exams would be taken at a centre or a school offering these to private candidates so these students will be taking the exams as their regular students would be. My son took his AS level English at another school as an external candidate - the certificate states him as a candidate from that particular school. Therefore after taking the exam, they will receive a certificate from the board stating their grade and the centre or school in which they sat the exam not where they were educated.
